There was a day this week when things were not going smoothly for me. I went to bed the night before with a to-do list as long as my arm and woke feeling pressured and anxious before stepping out of bed. If the start of the day was bumpy, the rest of it was downright rocky.
Nothing was getting done as I’d hoped, new to-dos were springing up at every turn, the house was a disaster and I was brimming with complaints. I don’t know what was going on with me that day but I felt like I was under attack. Peace and gratitude were not in the picture.
Then I read this post at exactly the right moment (thanks, Lisa). I paused in my frantic rushing and looked around with grateful eyes. I picked up my camera and took pictures of the mess and realities that speak loudly of the blessed life I live.
It’s not pretty but it is the truth – at some times a little harder to take than at others. I have no desire to show all our messes here – and I’m sure you’d rather not see them. But in the name of gratitude and truthfulness I’ve decided to post a little piece of reality here once a week. Likely just a single picture. And although I feel like I’m sounding a little lofty here, I’d like to add that I am doing this first and foremost for me because the reality is what so often makes this life beautiful and I hate to forget that.
I don’t know how long I’ll keep going with it but if you’d like to join me post a link or comment below. We all know that reality can be harsh but we’re in this together right?
Today I’m thankful for the signs of spring across my floor, a door that does its best to keep the weather out and the sunlight the streams through.
Wishing you a week ahead full of peace, love, blessing and gratitude.
Sounds like a normal day for me LOL!
Seriously though, we all have these days…I often wish I better understood what made one day “good” but another “hard” or “stressful” …some days I seem to handle things better than others.
Great idea to look for the silver lining in the cloud (((hugs)))
You make me want to start my own blog just so I can show the type of cycloned
disasters that rip through my home.Chris always makes fun of me because I always am saying “I just want to get ahead for once”he laughs because he doesn’t understand what that means”get ahead”….men.I have a list that goes like this…”a list of things I want to get done by the end of the day” a”list of things I want to get done by the end of the year”and “a list of things I want to get done by the end of my life” They are full of eraser marks and scribbles…and most of the items end up on the things I want to get done by the end of my life list lol.Just to let you know…I can’t see the top of my breakfast table. It is filled with books construction paper and cereal bowls….I guess I should get the kids on task:)
good post my friend. I feel I have “come to peace” a bit more with the mess lately (no joy to my hubby I’m sure). I’ve just decided that it’s not a priority for me. My kids are, and they are happy. I like to keep things organized for them because I do think that rhythm is important and I notice a calmer presence in both of them. That being said, things get out of control around here sometimes (you should see this place right now)! I’ve started slowly finding the order again and hope to have it back soon, but the kids are outside, they are happy, it is a beautiful day…What more can i ask for.
You are an amazing mom to 5 little beings! If you can keep any sense of order my hat is off to you my friend! keeping up with my 2 (3 counting Greg:) is tough. You rock the world!
this is a good post! and so true. it isn’t always sunshine and light, is it? i like this idea though and look forward to seeing where it may lead.
ps: if it makes you feel better, when it’s really windy you can hear the windows in our old house shaking in their frames đŸ˜‰
I have countless reality checks throughout the week. It’s so easy to step out in your best shoes when blogging…my house is in a constant state of wrestling: clean and orderly, messy and chaotic. Maybe we’ve been too house-bound? Looking forward to spring. And learning to be thankful for even the messes.
Oh yes, this seems all too familiar to me, as well. I actually just did a post on something like this yesterday. Funny that! I’m learning to embrace the mess a little more and try try try to focus on more important things, like say, getting a meal on the table. It can be all too much at times, but embracing it really is the only option. I like your idea of posting real life. I always feel happier after visiting here, it seems another kindred spirit is feeling similar feelings as me:)

It has taken me more years than I care to count to realize that it is OK to not have the perfect home. Thank you for sharing!
Thanks SO much for this post! I spend way too much time trying to keep the house orderly and not enough just sitting and enjoying the little people causing it…..i think im going to photograph our messes and scrap a page for the babies books so they can see one day what they put their mom thru! LOL
This post is fantastic! I know I have my own personal reality checks — but don’t often pause to think of them as blessings. What a wonderful way to shift your perspective!
What a lovely blog you have!
