…Well, spring may be an overstatement but since the snowy photos from our weekend the weather has been decidedly kinder to us. The wind is cold but the sun is warm and the snow is melting. I’m ignoring the weather forecast which is predicting snow over the weekend.
Thank you for all the warm wishes. I think they worked – just look at that melt!
I was very pleased to be able to take my fisherman outside in his sweater to get some pictures without donning hats and coats. He was so excited when I announced it was his for wearing yesterday (although unblocked) and proudly modelled it for his big sisters – who have wasted no time in putting in their sweater requests.
I’m really happy with how it turned out. The colour is great and he loves that it matches his bow tie (pattern found here). “Can I wear it with my bow tie?” was one of his first questions. It is warm and cozy and hopefully has enough length to fit him through next winter.
The pattern was difficult for me. It was only my second time tackling short rows and my first attempt at raglan shaping. I did the yoke four times before I worked it out (due to my inexperience with short rows), then had some problems with the garter stitch panel at the front. The front panel kept wanting to grow, not sure if I was missing a stitch marker or what but I caught on (a couple rows too late) and adjusted to correct it. I love the design and I certainly admire the designer‘s other patterns but I don’t know if the pattern was unclear or if I just couldn’t make sense of it. I know I’m not the only one to have trouble with it but now that I’ve done it once I will definitely try it again someday.
The wool is used is Quince and Co‘s Puffin. It was a dream to work with – so soft and I loved it’s chunky texture as well as the feel of the single ply. I am fearing it was the wrong wool to use for an active boy’s new favourite sweater, though. It is an incredibly warm sweater (perfect for a boy who in the past has needed convincing to wear shorts on hot summer days) but the single-ply is pilling already! Already! That’s after only a few hours of wear! Live and learn, I guess.
This boy never runs out of crazy faces.
Because of the pilling and the boy I’ve given it to, I’ve decided to let this be an everyday sweater. There is really no reason to keep it for special occasions although I’ll admit to a little shudder when he came in from playing with mud caked up to the elbow.
Liam requested this pose, “Look, it’s like I’m saying peek-a-boo.” Followed quickly by, “Now you should shoot a video.” Oh brother.
I got the warm fuzzies watching him run around in it yesterday, proudly displaying it to anyone around and in his usually sweet way complementing me on different aspects. I am continually amazed at how genuinely thrilled these kids are to have something made just for them. That simple fact is enough to keep me making and creating for them – the added fact that I thoroughly enjoy the process is just a bonus, right?
Thanks for coming by – especially to you non-knitters who may just think I’m crazy to get so excited about a sweater.
Rachel the sweater is simply gorgeous! Nice work mama. I have got to make one of those bow ties for Corey I love it. Congrats on the melt, apparently we are getting a storm tonight! So sad, maybe it will turn to rain. Isn’t it great that they love the mama made things. Molly want me to make a whole summer wardrobe for her…
Oh I LOVE how the sweater turned out!!!! It looks awesome Rachel!! And that yarn and color, perfect :). I am so intimidated by sweaters right now, but you inspire me!!
The PERFECT boy knit! He looks awesome.
Wow! That is some gorgeous sweater (not to mention your model!!) Congratulations on completing such a feat – what an achievement, Rachel! You make your mom very proud!!
it looks fabulous! and what a cute model too! how old is he? my guy just turned 8 and he’s obsessed with bow ties – i think it’s very, very cute. you should definitely be proud of yourself!
Rachel! You are amazing! That sweater is so awesome, and it looks so good on the little guy!
Rachel, the sweater is beautiful! I love the color- for some reason I have such a fondness for a good dark blue wool!
I know what you mean about letting him just wear it, and feeling shuddery when you imagine it caked in mud. I have to let go over and over. . .I remind myself that getting truly worn is what is important.
Also, my children love things I make just for them- it’s great. It is my hope that they grow up with an appreciation for things handmade- and that they use their hands themselves their whole lives.

It’s beautiful! And your little man is quite photogenic – together they are an adorable combination. xoxo
Oh, it’s *lovely*! So handsome! That shade of blue is perfect, and I *LOVE* the bow tie! Well, done! Well, done!
I’ve been knitting for sixteen years, and I still learn new techniques and tricks in almost every pattern I knit-up. It provides a challenge, and keeps the hobby fresh and exciting (but, sometimes frustrating, too!).
The sweater I’m knitting now for my little boy is to be a play sweater, too, and I know that it will probably raise my blood pressure to watch him roll in the dirt with it this spring, but then again, I do want him to get wear out of it. If I saved it for special occasions, I know it would hardly get worn at all. I plan to have my Luke wear his sweater as a popover in lieu of a jacket.
I really love how your son’s sweater came out. And seeing his bow tie was such a sweet surprise!
I too love that my kids love what I knit for them. I’m having the same nervous feeling you did, though, about the mud on his sleeve. I can picture the sweater I just finished for my daughter tossed into the bottom of her backpack and surrounded by leftover lunch and winter boots. But she loves it, so I guess that’s all that should matter.
What a beautiful sweater on a very handsome young man and the bow tie is adorable!
Warmly,
Tracey
What a great sweater and LOVE the bow tie too!
Oh it looks so perfect! The yoke doesn’t look struggled with at all. I can’t believe that you did this so soon in your knitting life! It took me such a long time to even start a sweater. And for the first year, most of them were not wearable. WOW
nice work mama!!! he looks so sweet, especially with the bow tie! and it looks like it will fit next winter – that is the best!
Oh, I would be SO excited if I had made a sweater like that. And I would be way proud of that cute little boy too. Congrats mama!
Oh, I love it! Your sweater turned out so nice. And that’s quite a handsome gentleman you have there.
The sweater looks nice on him.
And I agree with you that it’s so great to make thing for kids.
It looks wonderful!! What a handsome model you have! 🙂
