  1. Rachel, I really loved knitting for my new babes, too. I usually used natural coloured wool as I always thought that by the time they are eating solids, natural coloured wool would become multi-coloured stained wool. I also knit a few of these pebble vests and pilot hats. I also sewed a quilt for each of my three. Hope you’re well…I’m sending many peaceful baby thoughts your way:)

I’m sure the vest will fit. And I’m also amazed about how tiny newborn babies are and the fact that I forget it so fast ๐Ÿ˜‰
I didn’t knit much for my own kids when they were babies – my mom made that knitting ๐Ÿ™‚ I think there is so much cute things to knit for babies now compared to when I had my firstborn 11 years ago! So I guess if I had a baby now I would be knitting a lot of baby stuff ๐Ÿ˜‰ I really like the Norwegian sweet baby cap and some cute booties.

I’m sure the hat will be beautiful ๐Ÿ™‚ …I didn’t have any opportunity to knit for a baby before but my cousin just found out they’ll be having a baby so some time soon I might start something tiny tiny and cute myself ๐Ÿ™‚
good luck with the vest ๐Ÿ™‚

It is hard to remember that newborns are about the size of a bag of sugar! I think it would have been just terrible if you ‘hadn’t’ purchased a hard copy of Anne of Green Gables; it really is a wonderful story. I have never knit anything for a baby so I’m no help in that department-sorry. Have a wonderful Wednesday.

  5. Kristi says:

good book score! My favorite baby knit is a Gift Wrap Romper. It is so precious on! http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/small-things-romper–sweater

    Baby-on-the-way, how exciting!

I just recently knit up the Cascade sweater for a new baby. You can find the pattern here: http://www.petitepurls.com/winter10/winter2010_p_cascade.html

Isn’t it something else, how tiny they are when they’re brand-new? I remember when we brought Asher home, wondering when the heck Julia got so huge – she still seemed so tiny the day before… I wish I’d been confident enough to knit for them when they were very small; there isn’t much in this world that is cuter than a newborn in hand-knits.

I’m glad you’re enjoying The Dirty Life; I have to go to the library today to pick up the copy that is waiting for me – I’m pretty sure I requested it there at your recommendation. ๐Ÿ™‚ xo

Can’t wait to see the itty bitty pebble vest :). And if I haven’t said it already, congratulations on baby #6. That is so so wonderful Rachel :). And both teddy bear patterns are so so sweet. I couldnt choose between them either. Lots of love happiness to you with your new bundle of joy on the way :).

  9. Crystal says:

I confess I didn’t knit much for my little guys when they were babies…
I wish I had though, so I’m making it up by knitting for them now ๐Ÿ™‚
p.s. love your thrift store book finds. I think you were completely justified in buying a hardback copy of AofGG.

Oh that sweater is going to be so sweet. I can’t wait to see the end result! I wish you could knit on the front porch with me! I’m sure our kiddos would be having a blast in the yard and we could just hang and be mamas! Oh and I might have to rub your belly:) Excellent finds on the books!

  11. Tonya says:

The vest looks great. I am looking forward to knitting a tiny one for our litte one too.
    When are you due?
    Warm wishes, Tonya

I love tiny knitting…so satisfying, almost instant gratification!
What great book finds, too–I think we are on our second copy of Anne; they get re-read so much that they begin to lose pages after a couple of years.

  13. i’m still (i know, i know) longing to knit that vest. unfortunately i had less than pleasant experiences knitting for others (outside the immediately family) but i think your wee hat will be a big hit! if it’s any consolation to you, we have a duplicate copies of several classics because they’re too hard to pass up, especially when you find a used hardback. i didn’t realize this baby would be the 6th, i thought the 5th so somewhere my math doesn’t match up with the house full of jays line up ๐Ÿ˜‰ when is your due date?

  14. Hats. I love love love hats for littles. I don’t think we put them in them often enough, and I love them! Your vest looks lovely! So glad you are happy with it!

Your pebble is so sweet. I adore Ann of Green gables & Shakespeare for Children sounds wonderful. My favorite baby knits are pilot caps, booties & sweaters. The Cascade sweater pattern is pretty cute & I love the Little Turtle Knits pilot cap pattern.

I really like Pebble for newborns as well as socks or booties. My favorite for baby girls is the Saartje Booties. They do require some weaving in of ends, but they are oh so cute! The kiddos and I have been listening to Anne of Avonlea this past week. Such good stories.

  17. Sachi says:

The vest looks so nice and the color is lovely. Those bears are adorable too. I love them both and so will that new little baby (and the parents). I know what you mean about knitting for others. I pick the recipients very carefully so as to not get my own feelings hurt!

This is my favorite new born knit:

Can never have too many Anne/LLM books ๐Ÿ™‚

Favourite baby knits -a tie between the Baby Surprise Jacket and February Baby Sweater -both by Elizabeth Zimmerman. I also love the Leaf and Lace set in the old Beehive book (http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/leaf-and-lace-set-for-3-months)

    Rachel,

I’ve been out of the loop too long…Congratulations on the new baby on the way!!!! I recently made my first pebble vest for a friend and am secretly hoping that I’ll get to make one for my own someday should I be so blessed again. I also made the Kimono Baby Slippers {http://pruline.canalblog.com/archives/2010/01/04/16385448.html}, and they are adorable and super easy to knit up (even if you are like me and can’t read French)!

Glad to catch up with you again!

  22. Angela says:

Sorry you had to partially redo the vest. I’m still amazing by how tiny newborn things are too. Just doesn’t seem real until you’re actually holding said little one. And because you said it, I now want to “tiny size” something. ๐Ÿ™‚

I love kimono sweaters for little ones. Carina Spencer has a beautiful seamless kimono pattern that you can find on Ravelry. Looks darling. She also came out with another tiny sweater lately that’s gorgeous too.

  23. Cory says:

all i can say is I wish I had learned to knit before I had my babies…
I missed out on knitting the real little things.
    enjoy!!

I was just thinking about Anne of Green Gables with my oldest daughter. I can’t wait to read it again — it’s been, well…a long time. I’ll hunt around my book shelf and knitting pattern ntbk and get back to you on the patterns.
Don’t you just love the smell of a vintage book?
