Another Wednesday, another yarn along…and perhaps a little disappointment that I haven’t been the most diligent knitter.
I’m still working away on my little green elephant. I have to admit I haven’t picked this guy up quite often enough this past week. My first excuse was the metal needles that were turning my left hand into a claw but then I got totally hooked by my last read and my knitting was abandoned for a few days.
Now I’m ready to start on his legs while dreaming of the next little people sweaters on my list. I suggested this and this to my oldest daughter who promptly rejected both but decided she loves the stripes in this sweater. I have Cascade 220 in a darker blue for her sweater. I’m also dreaming of little cardigans for my nearly four-year-old yellow-loving princess – perhaps this Elsie cardigan or finally a tiny tea leaves? Is it coincidence that both of these cardigans are shown in yellow?
I love to make unrealistic knitting goals for myself…Two sweaters for the two birthdays in the next two months…while my head is already swimming with yummy newborn knits? Er…This pregnancy has been demanding more resting time so I guess I should get busy on that knittingย resting.
As for the read that tore me away from knitting this week…The Forgotten Garden. I loved it! I am a mystery lover but I’m also a huge wimp so I rarely venture into anything more modern than my classic favourites, The Woman in White and The Moonstone but this book was perfect for me. It pulled me in, I was intrigued and entertained and I could still sleep afterwards! Now I’ve started on to another book by the same author, Kate Morton, The Distant Hours. I’m not sure what to expect from this one but I’m hopeful it will be another great read. I’ve also started The Friday Night Knitting Club. I’m trying to pace myself with both of these – if I get to absorbed in a book I can’t seem to do anything until I’ve finished it (ahem, The Forgotten Garden).
I also wanted to show the books that the kids have been choosing for bedtime reading lately. As I mentioned in this previous post, we love the Rupert Annuals. The older girls adore these stories, as do I, so we’re keeping our eyes peeled during our thrifting trips for other copies. Liam has been choosing, Mr. Meddle’s Muddles, an Enid Blyton book I hadn’t seen before. The stories are so charming – sort of reminiscent of Amelia Bedelia. The older girls don’t always share Liam’s choice of book but they gravitate around when this one comes out.
Thanks for all the input on last week’s post. I was impressed to hear of the many varied preferences in knitting needles. This week I’m on the hunt for a ball winder. I have wool for my upcoming projects but winding centre-pull balls on a wooden spoon is getting old fast – I’m losing so much knitting time! I’m curious how other knitter’s deal with their skeins. Can any of you suggest a ball winder that you think is fantastic?
I’m holding my breath to see ifย Ginny will be posting her yarn along this week…wondering if her babe has arrived yet! Either way I’m always happy to share the knitting and book joy we’ve been getting into – and see what others have been getting into as well.
Happy Wednesday!
It seems that Ginny has posted I was keeping my fingers crossed for her ๐
I’m with your little yellow lover- yellow is probably my favorite color to knit with- I’m in the middle of a yellow lace shawl right now in fact.
As for the ball winding? I’m winding my own right now and hinting heavily that a ball winder for my birthday.
that elephant looks cute, as do all the sweaters that you linked to, I love the tiny tea leaves
awww little green elephant – how cute! ๐ good luck with all your projects ๐
The elephant is going to be so cute! I really have to finish the books I’m reading now, so I could start on some of Kate Morton’s book too ๐
I love the yarns you have picked out for the wee ones and the elephant is just adorable! Have a wonderful Wednesday Rachel.
Have fun choosing which pattern you are going to make for your girls. I often get all excited about a new project then get overwhelmed with all the beautiful patterns, that I don’t actually start anything!
Glad you enjoyed the book. The elephant looks like it is going to be cute. Jacinta
๐ I made this elephant (Ysolda’s pattern, right?) it was a bit tricky but very cute in the end. You can see it on my blog or on ravelry (I’m surfchick). I called it Orangina cos it is orange.
And I’ve read one of Kate Morton’s books “The house at Riverton”. So good. “The secret garden” is on the pile of books to read! Which wil have to wait a bit cos I’m tackeling Tolstoi’s Anna Karenina at the moment. It has 950 pages :O but is easy to read like any other historic novel. Just it was written at the time.
Get a ball winder! I got one for last Christmas with a skeiner and it is soooo much better and also lots of fun (report on my blog). We assumed there might actually be people who just wind balls for fun and don’t knit. My mother could only find plastic winders. I don’t know if there are wooden ones out there.
I really need to get the next book, The Distant Hours. I loved the Forgotten Garden! I love the yarn you chose, very cheerful!
The yarn colours are just beautiful. Best of luck with getting that ball winder. I can’t help you with any suggestions but I look forward to reading the reults. Enjoy your week of reading. Katie x
Can’t wait to see that elephant finished. I sure know what you mean about needing to rest during pregnancy – I really can’t get through the day very well without a nap and this has never been the case with the previous 6.
Thinking of you.
Warm wishes, Tonya
you’ll get the elephant finished…I’m going to have to check out The Forgotten Garden, I’ve heard it mentioned a few times and now I am intrigued. As for a ball winder. I don’t have one, just a wooden swift from a flea market that I love. But, please do tell about winding a center pull ball on a wooden spoon??? I’ve never heard of this, I just deal with my ball flopping all over the place and dream of the the lovely wooden ball winder that Halcyon Yarn sells.
I have a ball winder and a wooden swift. If you can, I suggest getting both. They are so wonderful to use. Plus, my children LOVE them! Which, of course, means that I get many more balls wound. ๐ I got a pair from Webs with a gift card for Christmas.
Everything in cycles. Your knitting is so pretty and I am really enjoying those colors!
I would love to have a ball winder! So far, my best method is to have my husband do it for me and he just holds the skein around his knees as he winds it by hand. When I try to do it myself, I spend more time untangling than anything else. The elephant is going to be darn cute. I think I’ll try a toy. Its something I haven’t done yet.
Those are some great knitting patterns you linked to. I like that striped sweater, too!
I’ve added The Forgotten Garden to my reading list. Everyone seems to like it.
Wow, you are getting a lot done! I am not expecting and just can’t settle down enough to knit or sew! Just garden and read about other people knitting….:)
OK. This clinches it. I have to read Forgotten Garden! The elephant looks great!
Seems like it was one of those weeks for a lot of us! Your elephant is going to be adorable…
I got my ball winder from Knit Picks. It’s a hand-crank one, with a handle or a clamp that are interchangeable. Now I just have to save for a swift so I can stop hanging skeins over the arms of my rocking chair to wind them. That never works out as well as it seems like it should… xo
Beautiful yarn and wonderful books. I just discovered your blog and I’m glad. I really want to read some of the books you mentioned, I haven’t heard of all of them. Welcome to my blog too!
Thank you so much for commenting on my blog, because it led me to check out yours! You write so beautifully…I have really enjoyed the few posts I’ve had a chance to read so far! Good luck with your elephant and your multiple sweaters! ๐
Hi – thanks for dropping by. I always think knitting toys will be so quick, but I end up taking weeks and getting thoroughly fed up. Love your book list, my 4 year old absolutely loved Mr Meddle, but I’m afraid I wanted to send him on an anger management course. Must be my age… x
Oh! Elijah is coming right along! (sorry I am late responding this week!)
