With hearts aching and eyes damp we said goodbye to grandparents, vacation and the ocean.
It was a long day but we managed to get in the door just before the clock struck twelve.
Here are some impressions.
:: An eldest’s request that we forgo the fast route for the detour through Vancouver (which is what us adults really wanted in our heart of hearts).
:: Liam asking in Vancouver if we were in Calgary yet. When he was told no, he requested an appetizer.
:: Amalia announcing when she turns 16 she will buy her own van, listen to ABBA and drink chocolate milk.
;; Revisiting, albeit from a moving vehicle, some of our favourite spots in a most beloved city.
:: Sarah singing, One of Us is Crying – just that one lyric over and over.
:: Simon removing shoes and socks for his blanket and trucks kiss his toes.
:: Dan’s frustration with drivers who do not follow, “Keep Right Except to Pass” and teenagers who throw footballs at the van.
:: A cappella singing of many ABBA songs with various true and made up lyrics.
:: Liam asking every few minutes when we would get to the tunnels then at every approach feigning quiet reading until we entered at which point he’d exclaim, “Who turned out the lights?”
:: Peanut butter cookies that bought peace at an opportune moment.
:: My delight at finding fresh local cherries at a quick stop for much cheaper than we’d pay at home.
:: The elderly woman who gave up her bathroom stall for a rather desperate Sarah.
:: Discovering I’m much more pregnant than I was three weeks and my bladder has much less room.
:: Sarah announcing three-quarters of the way home that she wanted to go back to Grandpa Jay’s house now.
:: Beginning and ending out trip listening to this album and this favourite song in particular.
:: Everyone settling in to sleep in their own familiar beds in their own familiar room in their own familiar home – even while those hearts were still rather tender.
*I would also like to point out how many of these impressions were inspired by ABBA. I do not enjoy ABBA, my children cannot get enough. It’s becoming a problem.
Happy weekending friends!
I find it hard saying good-bye too…and it’s being back in my own bed that helps the sadness go. (((hugs))) Looks like you all had a wonderful time though!
Goodbyes are hard, but there really is nothing like your own bed and home to come back to. I hope the adjustment to being home is a gentle one. I’m sure you all have some beautiful memories to call upon.
I can see how that song is a favourite. It’s lovely. Jacinta
This made Dad and I laugh as we’re driving to work. Glad to hear amongst all the ABBA you got some quality music!
Amailia and Sarah are two girls after my own heart. ABBA Gold is one of the CD that is constantly played in my car.
Singing “Waterloo” on my way home from work (back when I was working) on a particularly crappy day made me feel so much better. 😉
Parting is such sweet sorrow. I have thoroughly enjoyed your photos of your trip. Save travels home!
What beautiful pictures! I use to love ABBA and didn’t know they were still around? Have a great weekend Rachel. The baby is due soon right? I’m so excited for you and can’t wait!
Such a wonderful post; your kids are amazing. I wish I’d been sitting in the car with you all. 🙂 Listening to the favourite song in the background right now – it’s beautiful!
Have a happy weekend and welcome home.
I loved ABBA as a teen… I don’t know how my mother managed. Sounds like a wonderful trip! Thank you for sharing it with us!
the ABBA thing would drive me bonkers! so happy y’all made it home safely.
We’ve spoken about this, right? I actually stole the soundtrack to Mama Mia after about 9 months and said it must have gotten lost. I will risk going to hell for this action.
Such beautiful views – both far and right in your thoughts. Loved this post – simple, honest, sighing about how you miss family & scenery and hopeful. Oh, and funny, too! Just listening to ABBA while in some store recently (can’t remember which one) and commenting on it to my children. Looks like you had a wonderful time. Look at this way, if you always had those views and experiences, they wouldn’t remain as special.
I was beginning to wonder if you were an ABBA groupie, or maybe in an ABBA cover band. Ha! I feel the same way about Norah Jones — anything played nineteen trillion times at the request of my children prompts a problem.
Your trip looks just dreamy. I love how you wrote this — funny.
Safe travels.
Lol – i can just so imagine this road trip! Glad you got home safe and can rest your in your own bed. Looks like you had a wonderful trip – lots of memories there. xxx
“knowing me knowing you ahaaaaaaa” I love it! Hysterical that your kids are into ABBA. We were at a fair last night with cousins and Molly and her little cousin both knew all the words to Poker Face…I was like hey, how do you know that song??? Kids are funny.
So glad your trip home went well, I love Amalia’s plans for being 16! Maybe she and Molly can go on a road trip together!
