It’s going to be a quick yarn along from me tonight. We’ve enjoyed a long busy day but it’s wreaked a bit of havoc on the little babe’s schedule. I’ve just slid her from my arms asleep in hopes that I can gulp some dinner – it’s only 9 pm, that still counts as dinner doesn’t it?
So as I suspected last week knitting therapy was required so I tossed aside my previous plans and cast on a Classic Raglan for one of my boys. I say one because I decided on the size four which is (duh!) looking a little big for my slender two year old. I may end up making it nice and long for my tall, gangly five year old. Either way the sweater is serving its purpose of providing me with enjoyably mindless knitting with a wool I don’t have to pay much attention to (Paton’s Classic Wool). When I get bored of that I switch over to the Rae I’m still working on.
I’m also working my way through the beginnings of a gift knit which is perplexing me a bit. Provisional figure-8 cast-on…huh? Wish I could share it with you but it’s still top-secret. I’m thinking I may have to ban all of my extended family from reading yarn along posts until after Christmas.
I haven’t read much of anything since my last post other than reading with the kids (that’s always my favourite kind anyway). It’s suiting then that my photo this week includes a special book from my childhood that my mom sent in a a birthday parcel (she sweetly sent it out to my in-laws). I had just been thinking about this book and wondering if it was still kicking around my parent’s basement somewhere when it magically appeared at the bottom of my package – talk about mama-ESP. I love when a book I once knew so well still holds so much wonder for me.
Thanks for visiting for another yarn along.

I made a raglan for myself from one of Jane’s designs this summer. I am planning on knitting a sweater for each kiddo this year. I think this pattern may work well for the boys.
Just a quick “Hi!”
So glad you found time to eat dinner. I know how that goes. 🙂
Enjoy your time with your precious little one.
Have a great week!
What a treat to get a much-loved old book for your birthday – I think that would make me quite emotional!
I have that problem – not sure what is ‘safe’ to share on yarn alongs!
I love the raglan pattern, I’m sure it’ll be so sweet whoever gets to wear it in the end!
i hope you get some much needed sleep and a moment here and there for some knitting. love your robert mcclosky book, that was very sweet of your mom.
Most of my yarn alongs so the beginning of my projects, but not the finished item because they are Christmas gifts.
I just read about the Provisional figure-8 cast on in the Wendy Knit’s Lace book. I only know how to do a long tail cast on so I am a little lost with this new one too.
Robert McCloskey is a big hit around here too and how sweet of your mom to sent it to you. xx
That’s a favorite of my husbands from growing up too. It’s amazing how moms just know sometimes, isn’t it? 🙂
Love that mama ESP! It is the season of secret knitting, isn’t it? I hope you’re able to keep all the gift knits under wraps, so to speak!
Such a sweet simple sweater. I loved that book too and have it on my shelf. Yeah for your mother. My mother sent me a special surprise in the mail too – I’ll have to post about it later.
Such a great book! We’ve loved it for years. Have you guys read Blueberries for Sal? Same character but she’s younger…another great story. Love the sweater yarn, looks super pretty.
Given my fascination with Maine and love of Robert McCloskey, one would think that I’d be familiar with that book! But I am not & now look forward to reading it. Thank you!
I love the raglan idea, it is fun to knit up and soothing. You have peaked my interest on the secret knit project 🙂
*Sister who’s not always commenting but always reading…*
I love Robert McCloskey! I’m sure your kids are wrapped in the magic of him as well. A raglan in Paton’s classic wool is great idea, a simple classic that’s perfect for a boy. Love the color too!
That is one of my most favorite books too. Provisional 8? What the heck? Good luck with that one! I love having several things on the needles. When I first started knitting, I didn’t understand why folks would have so many projects going on at once. Now I totally get it. Enjoy your knitting therapy. I am right there with you.
Count me in on the loving-Robert-McCloskey bandwagon! I just started a more complicated knit than I’ve ever worked on before (hoping to post about it later today), and I think I’m going to need a simple project to go alongside as well!
Love the rich color of your raglan. And Robert Mcloskey… pure nostalgia. What a good, good mother you have.
Blessings, Debbie
Provisional figure eight cast on? Hmmmm…it kinda sounds familiar but I could not find anything in any of my knitting books.
Sorry. 🙁
what a sweet present from your mama!
The raglan will be sweet. I haven’t knitted anything for my son and would love to…but I think I’ll start with a hat 🙂 One Morning in Maine is one of our favorites – we read it every time someone looses a tooth!
I hope the raglan fits someone! One Morning in Maine is among our favorites too. Anything by McCloskey!
I hope the raglan fits someone! One Morning in Maine is among our favorites too. Anything by McCloskey, actually!
I LOVE this book. I bought it for my oldest baby and he is now 21 1/2. He was so lucky, because he would sit for a long time for stories and had a lot of people who would sit and read to him. They got wigglier as the number increased! #4 didn’t get near as much reading time.
I love the colour you’re using for the raglan. You have to figure it must fit someone eventually, right? We love One Morning in Maine here, too – and Make Way for Ducklings. We have copies of both & my littles can’t get enough of them. How sweet that your mother sent out your own childhood copy! xo
