I’m coming in late to this yarn along from our mountain getaway! I’m loving the extra time to lounge and relax.
In my usual fashion I panicked that I would run out of things to do so I packed enough books and wool to keep me busy for a month(s…).
My first plan was to breeze through the cuffs on the red boy’s blue raglan but in searching for my last ball of wool I realized I didn’t have one. How did I manage that? Once we’re back in the city I’ll have to search around for a match – hopefully in time for the looming birthday. Funny how last year I was working on the same deadline with a different sweater…
Instead I started on my first colorwork project. A hat circled in hearts is my vision. The pattern is mine (we’ll see if it works) inspired by the pattern From Norway with Love by pickles. I’m using Paton’s Classic Wool and Cascade 220 from my stash. After a few rows of the stranded colorwork I realized my floats were going to be a problem. I figured out how to wrap the floats to tidy up the wrong side of my work. Now I’m excited to see how the pattern comes together. I’m using a two-handed method for the first time also so I’m trying out my “picking” skills at the same time.
I’m reading bits and pieces of few different books right now, trying to decide what I’m in the mood for. I’ve got The Titan’s Curse, The Sweet Life in Paris, and The House at Riverton. I have a feeling I’ll cop out with the easiest of the three – The Titan’s Curse. Although after finished The Homemade Life, which was wonderful, I’m rather craving another food memoir. Three different genres…decisions, decisions. Am I the only one who feels guilty for indulging in too much fiction?
And since I’ve got you here – do you any of you colorwork experts have any tips to share with me?

joining Ginny for yarn along
P.S. Anyone want to join me here for yarn along next year?
I feel the fiction guilt from time to time too. Like I should be reading something “real.”
What a beautiful spot for a getaway! I hope you’re having a wonderful time 🙂
I’ll join you for a yarn along getaway *grin*. Can’t wait to see how your colorwork hearts turn out!
I have never knitted in colorwork, even though I know the method… Hmm? Maybe in some future I have to try it. It will be interesting to read about your experience and see the final result.
And yes, I would like to join you there for yarn along!
Gorgeous! I do miss the mountains! I haven’t tried colorwork yet, I say Be Brave, Just Do It! But I spend too long worrying about perfection myself.
Oh yes, what a beautiful location. I don’t know though…I might not get too much knitting done…I’d probably just drink coffee and stare at the mountain view. I’m interested in seeing that colorwork hat.
We obviously like the same kind of books–because I loved the Homemade Life, House at Riverton, and Sweet LIfe in Paris….guess I better add Titan’s Curse to my list!!!!
Good luck on your hat–looks like it’s coming along beautifully! How lucky to have a retreat to retreat to!!!! (I’m heading out of town this weekend…..2 days and you would think I was planning to be gone two months–from the pile of knitting packed. And there is even the remote possibility I might tumbled into a yarn shop!)
I wanted to thank you for recommending Molly’s book. I so thoroughly enjoyed it. Not sure about the colorwork as I still consider myself a novice. I have found practice makes all the difference in tensioning.
Oh! I would love to join you. It’s absolutely gorgeous!! I’m the world’s worst picker. I get it all twisted up and don’t ask me to purl…ugh! I can’t wait to see how the hat turns out. I love the colors! I’m going to have to check out some books. You’re not the first to rave about The Homemade Life. Enjoy your vacation!
I do hope your invented hat pattern works out! I also hope you find matching wool for the sweater. Lovely photo and of course I’ll join you there!
Can’t wait to see the hat when you are done! If you get to it, I am sure you will live The House at Riverton!!!!! Have a great time with the family.
Meant to say love, not live—– darn auto correct.
Looks like a perfect place to be 🙂
I love that hat pattern – I might knit a spring hat for Eirin if I can find some yarn for it in my stash.
Have a great weekend!
And you forgot to share the incredible price for such a “yarn along” getaway!
