Joining Ginny over at Small Things for another instalment of Yarn Along.
Things aren’t looking too different since last week…
I have nearly completed the mittens – only a thumb left at this point. I really could have finished the pair in a longish evening of knitting but this week, although I have often carried my knitting around the house, I have gotten little needle time in. I am determined, though, that as soon as this post is up I am going to escape the computer and work on my hat. It has been cold, cold, cold here and although they are calling for a warm up over the next few days it will undoubtedly be followed by a return to the cold, cold, cold and this mama needs a warmer hat!
As for reading, I am loving Howards End. It has been so enjoyable – just the thing for my craving of all things turn of the century. I’ve even had a little luck listening to it for free at Libravox (public domain books, ie. published before 1923, are read by volunteers are made available for free). I don’t usually do too well with audio books and I really do prefer the feel of a book in hand but I’m finding I can squeeze in a chapter without having to rewind too often and still keep my knitting in hand. I have particularly dug into it since the end of Downton Abbey (no spoilers, but for those of you who watched it – really, that’s how it ended??!).
I have also been listening to Animal, Vegetable, Miracle on my iPod. I read through most of it last year but didn’t quite get through it before my library renewals were up. Now I have been listening to it while I’m folding laundry – and because no one wants to get roped into helping me fold, I don’t usually have too many interruptions. Such a good book and I love having the audio book read by the authors. I would highly recommend it to everyone – although I do feel increasingly guilty about the bananas on my counter.
I’m hoping to have a new project (or at least a different project) and book to show for myself next week. Looking forward to seeing what everyone else has on the needles and in the book pile this week.
Happy Wednesday!
I had never thought of getting the audio book of the Animal, Vegetable, Miracle. I’m still waiting for it to be my turn at the library but I just may load it onto my ipod! No one ever wants to fold the laundry with me either 🙂 Actually tonight I asked the kids if anyone wanted to wash the pots in the sink and they all ran away very quickly. My husband was laughing because I sure new how to clear the room! *grin*. I actually didn’t mind putting the fingers on the gloves. The hardest part was to pick up the few fingers at the base of the finger everytime you started a new one. I always find picking up stitches a little tricky. I love your little mitts. The color is so pretty 🙂
The gloves are looking really good. I carry my stuff around with me too, I figure a row here and there is better than nothing!
Your mittens are just beautiful and I LOVE the idea of adding books to my ipod for happy knitting pursuits! Thank you for that suggestion, I’m smacking my head for not thinking of it, but am glad to know it now!
We just watched ‘Howards End’ for me about the 100th time, for my husband the first. Such a good movie and I’ve never read the book. I think it will go on my list of things to add to my ipod!
The movie is really good, too. I broke one of my rules and watched the movie before reading the book but I am surprised how true the movie seems to the book – so far at least.
Those are very beautiful mittens Rachel!I have never tried knitting anything other than scarves and blankets…maybe I should be adventurous and try.Audio books are my friend.I feel like I am cheating though, when I go that route.Sometimes the voice of the reader isn’t right,or they read so fast that my head ends up feeling dizzy. But my hands are free…(the loop hole),and the book is heard.Dont worry about those bananas…enjoy yourself and your free moments!
It does feel like cheating…plus one of the readers was all wrong but it was free so I can’t really complain.
Thanks for freeing me from banana guilt…Some things we just can’t give up.
I know what you mean about the bananas! My banana-buying decreased after reading that book too. 🙂 The mittens are lovely!
I loved Animal, Vegetable, Miracle–I’ve been meaning to re-read it. Way to squeeze in some mama time by using the laundry as defense–genius! (:
I took Animal, Vegetable, Miracle from my library a while back but never finished it. Your inspiring me to take it out again. I know what you mean about the bananas though… they are hard to pass up when they cost less than locally grown fruit and they are so easy to pack around for little ones…
Sweet little gloves! Looks like pink is in right now 🙂
I watched the Merchant Ivory “Howard’s End” for the first time a couple weeks ago when I was sick, and *loved* it. It is definitely on my list to read now, as I loved Forester’s “Passage to India.” Cute mittens!
I loved Room WIth a View (book and movie) but I haven’t read Passage to India (although I discovered I have two copies on my shelf…oops). Glad to you hear it’s also a good one!
Woops, I meant Forster. : )
Love audio books, but never thought of looking for Animal, Vegetable, Miracle. It is on my list, so now I thing I will listen instead of read. Your mittens are looking lovely. What a perfect shade of pink. And I love your hat. I hope you find time to knit for you.
Blessings, Elizabeth
My goodness those mittens are so sweet! Howard’s End looks quite interesting, I’m going to see if the local library has it.
I get in those *must read a turn of the century book* too. There is just so many, many good ones it is hard to choose sometimes!
Exactly my problem – what to read next!
I was a little taken aback by the cliffhangers at the end of Downton Abbey, but at least there will be another season!
Cute mittens!
Me, too. I didn’t expect the second season, although I’m glad there will be more!
I’m going to add Animal Vegetable miracle to the list!! Love the color of the gloves :).
It is so good! Very inspiring and informative.
cute cute mittens! good luck with the finish it’s so hard sometimes.
Love how the mittens are coming along! Such a beautiful warm color of the yarn! I know how hard it is to find time to knit when you have little ones around.
I read A Room with a View (also by Forster) last year and should really try to read Howard’s End too. I know what you mean about folding laundry. That’s my uninterrupted time to listen to NPR. I love it!
I love the mittens! I had started a pair for my little one but finished the 1st one and realized they’ll probably be too big NEXT year never mind for this year! So I’ll wait a little to cast on the 2nd one and work on a few other things instead! 🙂
It is so hard to get the right size! Now that I have used this pattern a few times it is getting easier but we did recently unearth a pair of mittens I made for my daughter a few years ago – and they fit now!
Audio is the way to go – as long as there aren’t too many interruptions… My littles just don’t understand all that yet. Someday…
Great job so far!
the mittens are so sweet, and I’m glad you’re enjoying the book, the movie is also superb (the Emma Thompson version) 🙂
Downton Abbey was sooo very good. Can’t wait for the next season. Also a big fan of Animal, Veg, Miracle, thanks for reminding me of it…I’d forgotten why I was trying to buy fewer bananas!
Those mittens are absolutely adorable. The last pair I made were WAY off gauge so I am a little nervous about mittens now but maybe I will give them another try…
