The news of the horror in Connecticut leaves me without words. Tears keep threatening and will fall.
But as my heart weighs heavy, I hear verses repeat. I played them as hymn on ivory keys and they echo still. Heaving hope into an ache that throbs.
I heard the bells on Christmas Day
Their old, familiar carols play,
And wild and sweet
The words repeat
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!
And thought how, as the day had come,
The belfries of all Christendom
Had rolled along
The unbroken song
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!
Till ringing, singing on its way,
The world revolved from night to day,
A voice, a chime,
A chant sublime
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!
Then from each black, accursed mouth
The cannon thundered in the South,
And with the sound
The carols drowned
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!
It was as if an earthquake rent
The hearth-stones of a continent,
And made forlorn
The households born
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!
And in despair I bowed my head;
“There is no peace on earth,” I said;
“For hate is strong,
And mocks the song
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!”
Then pealed the bells more loud and deep:
“God is not dead, nor doth He sleep;
The Wrong shall fail,
The Right prevail,
With peace on earth, good-will to men.”
~ Christmas Bells, Henry Wadworth Longfellow
My mind is just reeling here in CT as I watch the local news. I just don’t understand it and my heart breaks for the families of the victims.
Tears shed, and a baby held a little tighter. My heart breaks for them. Thank you sharing these verses.
Right there with you- trying to process it all and swallow this tragic injustice. Peace on all of those families. My heart is just broken for them.
Thank you. I needed that, so much. xo
Thank you for sharing those words, Rachel, when words fail.
We too have been deeply saddened by the horrible events in CT. Hope you had a nice holiday with your family – wishing you the best in 2013!
Thinking of you Rachel and hoping you had a wonderful holiday and New Year!!
