Joining Ginny again this week at Small Things for yarn along.
We’ve had a full and lovely week preparing for and celebrating Valentine’s Day. Although my hands have been busy with hearts, sweets and a bit of sewing for my little Valentine’s, I have managed to finish my hat – well mostly. I closed it off and blocked it today before sewing in the ends. It seemed rather lumpy and I feared I might be taking it apart but when I gave it a quick try on while it was still damp I found the blocking seems to have done wonders! I have not blocked any of my knitted items before (I know, *gasp*) because I have mainly stuck to small things like mitts, hats and toys. I thought blocking seemed really intimidating, turns out it’s not so bad (will I be saying that after I block my first sweater?).
To finish the hat I need to pick three buttons and I have laid some possibilities out on the hat but I can’t decide which direction I want to go. I’m asking for opinions here. What do you think?
I’m tempted to abandon my, albeit weak, resolve to clear off my existing projects – especially after seeing all the sweet sweaters and vests that other yarn alongers are working on.ย Considering that three of these unfinished projects are belated Christmas gifts – two pairs of these mittens (shown in the photo above) and a surprise gift, duty would dictate I finish what I’ve started. In the meantime I am going to dream about what I am going to do with this wool from my stash.
I have almost finished listening to Howards End. It feels a little like cheating and some of the volunteers here read it all wrong (in my humble opinion) but it has been nice to listen to while I’ve been sewing or folding laundry this week. I’ve enjoyed the story although I did preferย Room With a View. I should have it finished this evening and I’ve decided to choose Reckless from my tall stack of library fiction. As you can see I’m also still enjoying Wee Wonderfuls and Last Minute Patchwork + Quilted Gifts. They are both falling into the category of drool-worthy and daunting.
Since there is nothing really new on my book pile this week I thought I’d also show a little peak of what my two oldest daughters and I have been enjoying at bedtime. Destination Moon proves to be another entertaining Tintin Adventure – not to mention straining with all the different voices to keep track off! The Magic Tree House books are so wonderful for the kids – just at the right level for them. We all enjoy the mix of adventure, excitement and information. We’ve learned lots – so far Tonight on the Titanic has been my favourite – I even cried while we were reading it. I don’t know about our current title – my kids are really sensitive to anything ghoulish (as am I for that matter) so I don’t know if we will actually get through this one. I may have to abridge it for them.
Looking forward to seeing other projects that are on the go this week! Thanks for stopping by!
Great job on your hat! I think I like the red square buttons best, but I really like the yellowish ones, too.
You have such great books at your library!
Oh we are crazy fans of tintin and the magic treehouse books. My son is CRAZY about them ๐ I love your hat to! I really like the first set of red square buttons to but those round wooden ones, second from the left, look like wonderful slices off of a branch and they are calling my name *grin*. So hard to choose!
Your hat looks great – can’t wait to see a photo with you wearing it. The red buttons really add some colour and I prefer the square ones to the round ones, but what will you be wearing with your hat? The buttons second from the left look great as well but they’re a little big – perhaps you might consider two buttons instead of three. My last choice would be matching buttons with the yarn and then you can wear it anywhere, anytime.
The hat looks great! I think I like the round red buttons, but they all look great. My kids have really enjoyed listening to the audio version of Magic Tree House. I think they have listened to them all!
Well it looks like most like the red buttons, but I need to put a vote in for the round brown ones second from the right. I love subtle and natural so I always tend to go for that! The hat is amazing and inspires me since I am struggling with my own!! Oh and thumbs up to audiobooks! LOVE them, for me and the kids :).
Gosh, I really think that any set of buttons would work beautifully! I am a bit partial to the ones second from the left. Kind of yellow, wooden … Your hat looks great! I really like the dark gray color.
I like the brown buttons (the old-fashioned ones) third from the left! It looks really cute, I love the hat!
love that hat! I’m drawn to the red for some reason. I’m on a mission to actually finish some projects this week!
ooh, great hat! I am partial to the dark wood ones- next to last in line. ๐
All good choices, but I think I would pick the yellowish wood, second from the left. But I’m a nutral kinda of gal and red is not my color. So I don’t know if this helps. Love your stash yarn. Can’t wait to see what you decide to make out of it.
Blessings, Elizabeth
I’ll add my vote for the second from the left….your hat looks lovely…blocking does work wonders…I’m one of those silly folks whonloves the finishing process…blocking, weaning, all those things…
I love Tin Tin!
Also, I think I would go with the red circular buttons.
The hat is so cute!
I love how great the hat turned out. Since red is my favorite color, I would choose the round red buttons…
Magic Tree House has been a favorite at our house. They haven’t read that book…I don’t think.
I’ve never blocked anything. I guess I should look up how to do it.
I’ll post later today.
Love the hat, it’s so cute! My dd and I consulted and we love the red square buttons or the larger round yellowish ones! It will be wonderful whatever you chose ๐ Fun books this week!
I’m a sucker for red, you know! Second, I think I’d go with what looks like the dark leathery buttons in the middle. They always look timeless.
Cute hat! I love the round red buttons. We love Magic Tree House at hour home, too!
I love the red squares! Great knitting!
So the kids are actually letting you give characters to the voices!?! They never used to do that, that’s awesome!
I like either the dark brown or the red buttons, I do like the idea of the red popping out a statement.
Hi Rach! Great hat! I am a big fan of the buttons in the top right photo – the big tan ones. That is, if they’re wood-ish and not actually yellow (I can’t tell). If they’re yellow, my vote would be the large, dark wood ones. I am partial to the earthy look, but they would all look great!
I love the buttons on your hat. Thanks for visiting my blog.
I like it with all of the buttons at once! Now, that would look fun! ๐
adorable button hats! How fun are those!
My boys LOVE Tintin. I vote for the biggest light brown buttons, though all are very cute. Nice work!
Thanx for visiting my blog! I`ve seen the movie A room with a view, never read it. It`s both romantic and sad isn`t it? I like red buttons by the way ๐
thanks for the visit!
I would really have to go with the red buttons – I think the round, rather than the square…..
love the pattern!
God Bless
Karen
I am the kinda girl that would sew on all of the buttons…because I think button hats rock lol.We have Tin Tin fans in this house, but they are still stuck on this Rupert thing.Little Mister got the 1976 and the 1977 annuals in the mail today for his birthday(yesterday).I made the observation that Tin Tin and Rupert were very similar in a lot of ways.Thankyou for inspiring me to pick up the knitting needles again….now I will be hooked on audio books lol.

I am having trouble posting this note …it keeps saying I have already wrote this…I know I am repetitive …but come on hahaha…..
Initially I thought that you had sewed all of the buttons onto this very funky hat (which could have been awesome)! I also like the light brown buttons (love the bigger ones) but I don’t think you can go wrong with any of them. I do think that they may not get noticed as much if you are go for the dark brown, but they would stylish and understated! ๐
Nice hat! I definitely like the round red buttons the best. ๐
Cute hat! I really love the buttons that are the second on the left (big wooden ones).
At first glance, I also thought all of the buttons were on the hat – and thought it looked cool. ๐ I like the red square buttons best.
beautiful hat. those buttons are all nice so I see why you are having such a hard time choosing. I think I like the brown ones that are 3rd from the right best…although it’s a tough call I don’t think you can go wrong with any
