Sharing in another week’s yarn along at Small Things.
This week has been filled with the promise of new knitting projects but I only actually took the plunge last night….around midnight. As I mentioned last week I had lots of possibilities in mind but actually settling on one was harder than expected. So many people to knit for, anxiety over matching a yarn with a pattern (I’m terrified of messing up gauge) and trepidation over starting a sweater had me dreaming (perhaps nightmaring) of knits, needles and skeins.
It all seems rather ridiculous.
I’ve very happily settled on the Fisherman Pullover (Ravelry link here) which I had been drooling over the last few months for my older son. The version Ginny revealed this week only increased my eagerness to give it a try. And, silly me, I didn’t even realize that the designer, Veera Välimäki, is the same who designed the pattern for my hat. I say it was meant to be.
I’m hoping I do okay with the pattern – I’ve only just started and have already had to pull out a few rows. Those short rows are a bit tricky. I’ve only done short rows once before and the YO at the beginning of the rows was confusing me. I’m still a little perplexed but hope I can make sense of it…if not I may be begging for help in this space next week!
I am knitting it in Quince and Co’s Puffin in Pea Coat which I won in this giveaway. Can you imagine my excitement when I won?? Plus it involved an email from Amanda Soule herself which, I’ll admit, made me rather giddy. And, oh my, it is a beautiful wool to work with.
I got some lovely reading time in over our quiet weekend and sped through The Fairy Tale Detectives by Michael Buckley. I really enjoyed it and look forward to checking out the rest of the series. A fun children’s book, geared to a younger set than last week‘s book, with all my favourite ingredients: magic, mystery, adventure and fantasy. Now I have the choice of what to read next, this decision I can handle. I spied a couple of books on my basement bookshelf that jumped out at me so I think The Complete Sherlock Holmes and Peter Pan will be up next – can’t believe that with all the classics I’ve devoured over the years that I haven’t read either of these. In the meantime I’m flipping through Anna Marie Horner‘s beautiful book, Handmade Beginnings.
And can I just draw your attention to the beautiful illustrations in my $2, 1980 version of the book? I love them.
We’re heading off for a week in the mountains a few day from now so I’m hoping there will be a little extra time for reading and knitting – although with the five littles in tow, snowy activities and an indoor pool at hand it may be wishful thinking.
Thanks for coming by – I always appreciate your lovely comments! I look forward to following others’ knitting adventures over at Small Things.
**Update: It’s 1 am and I’m still trying to figure out these short rows. I thought I was doing it correctly but now I am missing (I think) seven stitches. Anyone know this pattern and can offer any suggestions? I’m stumped! Thanks so much!!**
I cast on a sweater this week to and am a little worried that I might be heading in over my head! LOL. LOve love the color of your yarn and I can just imagine the excitement of winning it and getting the email from Amanda. So neat!! Have a wonderful holiday into the mountains 🙂
That yarns looks yummy to work with and I love the color.
Warmly,
Tracey
Love the yarn! I have no advice as I have never attempted a sweater. I am as befuddled as you with patterns, charts, yarn types etc. I am sure someone will offer some great advice. Enjoy your week away!!
Ooo!! More great yarn you have!! You have an enviable stash Rachel!! And that Peter Pan book!! There is something about that style of book illustration that makes it so sweet!! Can’t wait to see the pullover!
I just ordered a lavishly illustrated Peter Pan for my daughter’s birthday in April.
I didn’t like the Fisherman’s Pullover until I saw Ginny’s but she said something about wanting to skip the short rows next time, as some other Ravelry knitters did. I think I’ll do the same when I try it out.
What a nice giveaway win!
I bought Peter Pan last year, and I haven’t picked it up to read it yet!
Thanks for the reminder.
Good luck with those short rows. They can be confusing!
I love Puffin and what a lucky win from Soulemama! I’d be giddy too! I haven’t knitted the pattern yet but have it and would be happy to try and explain short rows. I’ve knitted about a million of them in my day of knitting wool pants for others.
What a fun sweater! I love those book illustrations!
Can’t wait to see the progress of this sweater. I’ve started tiny tea leaves for a friends daughter. one of these weeks I’ll have to join in on this yarn along it’s always so lovely. Just checking in on your blog sends me off onto all the other comments, and well…you know how that goes, hours go by…
I’ve wanted to knit with Puffin for a while. I’ve tried other Quince yarns but not that one yet. What a fabulous win for you! I haven’t knit that pattern, but it looks like you may be knitting short rows in the round? There’s a great photo tutorial here that explains short rows in the round, but I don’t know if they’d work for this pattern or not: http://www.woolywonder.com/forums/showpost.php?p=74291&postcount=34 Hope that helps!
I love the yarn!!
I had short row shortcomings recently, and found the video on knittinghelp.com to be extremely helpful. I think it’s under Advanced Techniques…you do have to scroll down to find it. Good luck!
I don’t know the pattern and it has been so long since I have knit short rows but the color that you chose is beautiful. Have a wonderful time in the mountains.
Oh what a lucky girl to win the Quince & Co yarn and so much fun to get a personal email from Amanda. I met her a book signing, and she is just so sweet and genuine. I love the color and pattern you chose. Sorry, can’t help with the short rows.
We read Peter Pan last year I belive it was, and everyone loved it.
Blessings, Elizabeth
Beautiful illustration! So diffrent from the Disney version 😉
I’ve been thinking about reading Sherlock Holmes for years, but there are always another book that comes in the way 😉 I might see if they have it at the library next time I go there.
You’re right the illustrations on this page are beautiful. I know the apprension when starting a new project with those stitches. Sorry I have no advice lately just unraval it in the beginning instead of half way through and end up with 3 huge balls of yarn lol. Have fun this weekend. Those barrettes down below came out cute.
The illustrations in your Peter Pan book are really good! I love the colour of your yarn and L. will love his sweater when you’re done. Good luck sorting out – I’m no help with knitting.
that yarn looks fabulous! and peter pan!!! we love peter pan. good luck on the short rows – there are some great tutorials out there.
LOVE the quince yarn and can’t wait to try the Puffin 🙂 The video’s linked above look very helpful, I have only done short rows a few times, but it was pretty much just turning the work and knitting back. Love the Peter Pan version as well, so pretty! Hope your getaway was full of knitting and reading xxoo
[…] and audio books playing during our drive tomorrow. Thanks to all the great help I received with the short rows (thank you, sweet friends), I’m hoping the Fisherman’s Pullover can be my vacation […]
